Oui oui

Here are some photos chronicling my Bastille Day. As per my previous post, I dressed up for the occasion. I wore a slightly modified Le Tour de Croissant outfit (It looked kind of bad at first, but I added a stripy top and a scarf and voila it looked great).

Suzie & Squiggle's Bastille Day

But it's your turn to make breakfast, Squiggle!

A croissant. Now I look even Frencher.

That was tasty.

And now for some beret spotting. Ooooh can you read what is written on it? Paris! Oui oui! She looks almost as authentically French as I do.

Hooray! xX Suzie

Pssst - Hollie did it too! yay! Anyone else?

Blue, white and red

Bonjour! Today started off very drab, then my gorgeous French friend sent around an email suggesting we dress up in blue, white and red to celebrate Bastille Day tomorrow. But of course! So I thought I would try something a little different and make pretty pictures of outfits. I have named each one.

Le Frenchy Casual

Le Baguette-on-the-go

Le Tour de Croissant

I apologise to all the beautiful people of France for my silliness :)

This project has been inspired by my very creative friend Emilie. She's been putting together fashion/style shoots, she's very clever and talented and I also want to appear clever and talented so I thought I would give it a go.

Mine are not as slick as Em's but it was fun. So what do you think? More importantly, what should I wear tomorrow? It's short notice but any suggestions? All outfits will be accompanied with black tights (brrr it's winter). If anyone suggests a preferred outfit I'll wear it tomorrow and take photos of my adventures. Happy Bastille Day!

Jumping confetti

A couple of months ago I worked temporarily in a very cluttered office that had been abandoned many times but never cleaned up. On my last day I figured it would be OK for me to take home any objects that took my fancy. Among these objects were:

  1. A very nice old fashioned bulldog clip
  2. Some matches - they always handy
  3. A pen that writes in purple I'd become very fond of
  4. The BEST thing: a conveniently purse sized box of confetti
So far I have used all of the objects except the confetti. I am waiting for a special occasion.

This photo by Suzy Lee via Booooooom has inspired me. Does jumping up and down count as a special occasion? I can do that :)

Paris Peek-a-boo

Not much to do at work right now. Entertaining myself with John Galliano for Dior's 1950s inspired Haute Couture Fall Winter 2009-2010 fashion collection. I love all the bright colours and the crazy shapes and the tulle. Lots of tulle. But as much as I have a fatal weakness for tulle in all it's forms I think my favourite is this little minx.

Braided hair

I'm seeing braided hair everywhere lately, I was so upset at first thinking mine isn't long enough. But hoorah - If I really really concentrate I can eek out a little braided hairband.

Fringe and bangs

Look at Squiggle, she's all like "care factor zero". Okay I know it's not the biggest news of the week but still, this is my hair we're talking about!

Some pretty for the weekend

Not a very productive week for me this past week. I did manage the following:
  • Bubble bath
  • Massive huge grocery shopping expedition
  • Afghan cookies
  • Dinner with the ex
  • Developed terrifyingly painful ear hurting- owww why me? **sob sob**
So here are some pretty from my computer to celebrate Friday:

(sorry the images are not credited, I used to just save stuff and forget. I'm better now, but these are all before I learned to be better)

Wild Things

Scream if you love wolf pyjamas :)

I am looking forward to this a lot. And for serious, if anyone wants to send me wolf pyjamas I'll be a very happy Suzie.

Hippy Hair Verdict

Oh no I forgot to give you an update with my Hippy Hair Washing trial! I bet you’ve been on the edge of your seats with anticipation. What will Suzie do with her hair next? That crazy ragamuffin! Well, it was one big fail. I only did it twice. It would get so knotty (and my hair is very short – I usually don’t even brush it) and take ages to brush out. Brushing it out hurt. I just couldn’t face it anymore, especially after a tiring day of go-go dancing and cookie baking. It also felt a teeny bit grotty.

The verdict – I think it’s a good thing to do and I know a few people who swear by it, but right now my poor little follicles just can’t cope.

PS - Thanks everyone who commented on my last post for being so caring and sweet. You all put a smile on my face. Big hugs all round :)

Finish my sentences

Dick and I decided to end our relationship a month ago. We're still on good terms and it's OK, I'm optimistic about the future.

A lovely award

There was a very happy surprise in my mail box tonight, Juanita has given Button & Squiggle a Lovely Blog Award. Look there it is on the left, see I'm not making it up.

Like all good awards it involves answering a series of questions, each mo
re fiendish than the last:

What are you wearing today?
Like right now? Serious? You asked at a really bad time because I'm in gray track pants, pink velour hoody and moccasins.

What's for dinner?
Wine and chocolate chip cookies. Oh yes, there was pasta too.

What's the last thing you bought?
Lovely Temperley London knock of dress that doesn't fit me. Read here.

What do you think about the person who tagged you?

She's a funny little bunny.

That question about a fully furnished, paid-for house that everyone answers with 'Paris' or 'New York'.
Paris. I'm a hopeless romantic.

What is your must-have item for winter?
A big bag of hot jam donuts. Also silk scarves, short dresses with thick awesome tights, chunky necklace and a flower made out of balloons.

If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would it be?
I'm a bit tired and wanting for a cheap massage, so maybe a beach in Thailand.

Who do you want to meet right now? A very generous person who wants to happily give me a house with no strings attached.

What is your favourite piece of clothing from your own closet?
Right now: My new black patent leather shoes.

What is your dream job?
Ha. Been there done that. You don't want to hear my "dream job from hell" stories.

What's your favourite magazine?
I really like New Scientist (waving a copy around is a great way to pick up nerds) and Yen. Very curious about Peppermint - I just subscribed.

What do you consider a fashion faux-pas?
Silly shoes.

Describe your personal style.
Girly/eclectic/fun/flirty.

What are you going to do after this?
Research a fun new project.

Three styling tips that work for you:
1. Stop and think.
2. Add some more scarves.
3. Blush will fix everything.

Now to tag a few other people.
I'm choosing just one person, Penny from Pocket Carnival. Have fun!

To Market to Temperley... or not

For about, oh, a year or so now I've been promising myself that I'll get up early on a Sunday morning and hit Camberwell Market. Camberwell Market is a Melbourne institution, and dragging yourself out of bed at a disagreeable hour for it is a rite of passage for any girl or boy who likes second hand junk. The market itself covers two large car parks in the slightly la-di-da suburb of Camberwell. Most everything there is second hand and in various stages of decay. Books, clothes, artworks, toys, furniture and plants. Oh and DONUTS! Yesssss hot jam donuts for breakfast are also a rite of passage (and they weren't decayed at all, we made sure we got the fresh ones).

I thought I would come away empty handed because I'm terrible at thrifting. My last thrifting excursion I did buy quite a few wonderful things - but they were all found by other people. I can never ever ever find anything. Until last Sunday.

In a fit of donut fueled excitement I got a little crazy, but I was trying really hard to not be too crazy and was saying no no no no to heaps of cheap things and then I saw this beautiful dress, 100% silk and only $15 (which I could have probably bargained down but I was too incapacitated by my post sugar hit). I bought it, all the time thinking it looked SO familiar. The tag was removed so I didn't know if/what brand the dress was. Then I realised, of course, who knows more about fashion than anyone? Fifi Lapin, that's who! So after some sleuthing I realised that she wore it ages ago. I'm pretty certain that it could possibly be the Temperley London Moon Mini dress (RRP $1290) - or at least a lovely knock-off.

The one huge problem.... it doesn't quite fit. I can squeeze into it but it hangs all wrong. Bummer. Guess I'll either have to sell it or cut it up and make something that fits me. For now though I think it makes a lovely wall hanging.

Enough of my cookie and wine fueled ramblings, tell me about your most favourite market discoveries!

EDIT - more sleuthing and it's just a lovely knock-off. The real one has a chunk of pattern on the back that mine doesn't have and totally different details.

The Apparition Theif

Free things and also things that cost less than $4 are so nice and I love encountering them. Sometimes though I have to steal something to make it free, like this print I found laying around at my sister's place. It's an artist proof for her Apparition print release which is currently available through A Paper Tiger.

It is very beautiful in the real life. Unfortunately I took the last one that was available for stealing but there's still a few ones that you can buy legitimately here.

Hippy Hair Washing

For a while I've considered shampoo and conditioner to be kind of icky. It's so colourful and shiny and glossy and can't possibly be good to put on your hair or allow to be washed down the drain. So as of 20 minutes ago I'm embarking on a month long trial of Hippy Hair Washing. I'll be using bi carb soda and apple cider vinegar to clean my hair and nothing else. I did my first test run just earlier, using 2 tbs of bicarb mixed with some water, and then 2 tbs of ACV and then I rinsed with water. The locks have been dried, poked, prodded and smelt and after not much scientific analysis here are my initial findings:

  • Don't get vinegar in your eye! It will HURT!
  • ACV doesn't smell that bad while you're washing so don't let that put you off. However afterwards I was a bit alarmed to find that I could still smell it pretty clearly. Once I dried it the smell subsided so all's good in the smell department for now
  • So far it looks pretty normal, shiny, but maybe a teeny bit lank
  • My hair was a super tangled mess after the shower and I had to brush it out very carefully, and I never brush my hair
  • It feels OK, maybe not quite as soft as usual but it's early days, once my hair starts producing natural oil again it'll probably feel fine
Because this has been the first time I didn't expect awesome results and I'm pretty happy overall with the experience. I'll play around with the quantities etc, see how my hair adapts and let you know what happens!

Inspiring me to stay focused on the Hippy Hair Washing trial is this cute bob from Painfully Hip. Love it, want it, I hope my hairs hurrys up and grows so that I can do the same.

Antwerp Rail Station

Watch this watch this! It's not your run of the mill flash mob at Central Station. Give it a few seconds to get going and it is adorable. It certainly put a smile on my face. I love people sometimes :)

The Youtube link.

Things have been happening. I got a job! Except the job has funny Internet and I can't read blogs while at work which is just the worst. So I have nothing else interesting to link to or say really. Oh yes I do! This made me happy even though I don't know them.
